In the Spring of 2008, Fab Masters Company had just finished building a 31,000 square foot addition to their manufacturing facility. While this addition was intended to house a new aluminum welding shop, Fab Masters struggled to find enough proficient welders.
Due to experiencing firsthand the industry-wide shortage of skilled welders, Fab Masters President & CEO Ron Troxell decided to start his own training program.
WTEC is Not Your Typical Welding Program
This is a very focused program designed with extensive hands-on training, as well as classroom support and supplemental materials to develop foundational knowledge. WTEC prepares workers to exceed industry expectations.

WTEC Becomes AWS Educational Institution Member
Welding Training Education Center, Inc (WTEC) provides quick and quality training to get skilled welders into the workforce. Consequently, the American Welding Society (AWS) recently recognized WTEC as an AWS Educational Institution Member. This announcement appeared in the December issue of their Welding Journal.
Manufacturing firms nationwide struggle to find enough skilled workers. Because of this, educational institutions, industry professionals, and the US government are cooperating to develop a larger skilled workforce. This collaboration encourages women, youth, and unemployed workers to pursue welding careers.
Likewise, labor experts believe coordinating training programs and local employers’ needs will help unemployment rebound.
“What you want to do is make strategic investments to help those younger workers get some new skill,” said Mark Price, a labor economist for Keystone Research Center in Harrisburg. “It’s a national challenge and a statewide challenge.”
For this reason, local community colleges and vocational training programs provide education to unemployed and dislocated workers to foster a confident local workforce. Kalamazoo Valley Community College, Southwestern Michigan College, and WTEC each provide this necessary training.
About WTEC
The Welding Technology Education Center (WTEC) was born from industry need to fulfill industry need. WTEC is an American Welding Society Educational Institution member located at Fab Masters Company, Inc. in Marcellus, Michigan. Due to experiencing firsthand the shortage of skilled welders, Fab Masters President & CEO Ron Troxell decided to start his own welding training program. As a result, WTEC courses are designed with employers’ requirements in mind. Instructors then teach the theory and facilitate the hands-on lab practice needed for students to become capable of producing high-quality welds. Consequently, WTEC is confident our graduates gain the welding skills needed to enter production or industry-level positions.
WTEC partners with Michigan Works to provide training to unemployed and displaced workers.
